Overview

There is no finer beginning for anyone wanting to make their first mark on the world of Pet Grooming than the AAA professional pet grooming programme. It is the ultimate in modern pet grooming education. Every scissoring and colouring technique that underpins the AAA philosophy, will be taught in detail to you. You will possess the newest, most up-to-date knowledge from the latest generation of qualified pet grooming instructors.

The course is divided into three in-depth stages covering all of the subjects needed to provide you with a fast track to pet grooming success. The nature and content of each stage develops as you progress through the course, but some things will remain constant; personal guidance and mentoring from an AAA instructors throughout all work sessions; theory and practical assignments to assess your progress at regular intervals.

What’s more, to help you become a more artistic groomer, we have integrated a Creative segment into our programme. We believe it is essential to understand more about the structures of both inner and outer lines of the dog body form. Through the arts segment, you will learn how to unleash your innate creativity and merge it with your understanding of the canine form to create an artistic grooming style that is uniquely you!

29 weeks to complete (2 lessons / week)

Full weekend (Sat + Sun) and only Saturday on every alternate weekend.

Module One

This module introduces you to the fundamentals of pet grooming – it is the basic foundation you will need to progress onto subsequent stages. Assessment will be held at the end of the stage.

Theory

• Identify a dog’s basic grooming requirements.
• Recognise canine anatomy:
- Muscle structure
- Topographical anatomy
• Distinguish if a dog is sick or unwell.
• Identify different types of pet grooming tools and equipment and their uses.
• Identify grooming safety rules.
• Demonstrate basic first aid.
• Recognise breed classification for FCI group 1 to 5.

Practical

• Complete basic grooming requirements:
- Ear care
- Nail care
- Remove/dematt undercoat
- Bathing techniques
- Drying techniques
• Apply proper pet handling techniques.
• Demonstrate scissoring techniques:
- Ability to cut a straight line
- Ability to cut a level top line
- Ability to cut round

Creative

• Complete a poodle lamb clip drawing:
- Side profile
- Rear profile
- Front profile
- Top profile

Module Two

This module aims to further enhance your scissoring and clipping skills while improving your understanding of breed standards and how breed standards affect our grooming. In the Creative sessions, you will learn to visualize and groom a dog in a 3 dimensional view. Assessment will be held at the end of the stage.

• Identify common canine health issues.
• Interpret poodle breed profiles and grooming standards.
• Interpret Poodle lamb clip profile and grooming standards.
• Interpret Maltese and Shih Tzu breed profiles and grooming standards.
• Interpret Pomeranian breed profile and grooming standards.
• Interpret sporting breed profiles and grooming standards.
• Recognise breed classifications for FCI group 6 to 10.
• Interpret Terrier and wire coated breed profiles and grooming standards.

Practical

• Demonstrate basic clipping skills:
- Paw pads
- Sanitary area
• Demonstrate the ability to clip down a dog (medical clip).
• Complete a poodle lamb clip on a dummy.
• Complete grooming for a long-coated breed in puppy clip trim:
- Shih Tzu
- Maltese
• Complete grooming for double coated breeds in standard trim and summer trim:
- Pomeranian
- Shetland
• Complete grooming for a spaniel breed in standard trim and summer trim:
- American cocker spaniel
- English cocker spaniel

Creative

• Complete cutting a round ball on square foam.
• Complete cutting lamb clip using foam.
• Complete wool felting and trimming.

Module Three

In this final module, we will work on your creativity using colours and concentrate on the final preparation for your certification focusing on the lamb clip. Assessment will be held at the end of the module prior to the grooming accreditation examinations.

• Describe animal welfare conditions in the grooming environment.
• Identify canine behaviour.
• Recognise canine body languages.
• Recognising cats breed.
• Recognising rabbits and guinea pigs breed.
• Demonstrate handling and restraint techniques.
• Demonstrate customer service skills and managing customers’ needs and requests.
• Identify different pet grooming services and products we can offer to our customers.

• Demonstrate clipping techniques on poodle face and feet.
• Complete a poodle lamb clip.
• Complete a long-legged terrier trim:
- Miniature Schnauzer
- Wire Fox Terrier
• Complete a short-legged terrier trim:
- West highland terrier
- Scottish terrier
• Complete an Asian fusion clip.
• Complete grooming a cat.
• Complete grooming a rabbit or guinea pig.
